SEEKING BOARD MEMBERS FOR THE TALLAHASSEE MUSEUM

The Tallahassee Museum seeks business and civic leaders who are passionate about the future of children, families, our natural and cultural environment, and community building, and who believe strongly in the Tallahassee Museum’s mission to promote knowledge and understanding of the Big Bend’s cultural history and natural environment, inspiring people to enrich their lives and build a better community.

Well-connected individuals are needed who can volunteer to help the Museum build its internal capacity to support growth and stability.

The following is a list of skill areas sought for our board:

ACCOUNTANT
CPA who can help oversee financial operations and the annual audit.

COMMUNITY BUILDERS
Well-connected liaison to potential partners among elected or appointed government officials, foundations, service agencies, non-profits, churches and family networks.

ENTREPRENEURS
Small business owners who have addressed the challenges of growth while remaining financially stable. Creative individuals who can help develop the museum's existing or potential earned revenue streams.

FUNDRAISERS
Individuals who enjoy identifying, cultivating and soliciting others for worthy causes.

PR/MARKETING
Professionals who can support the museum's branding and marketing efforts, or who can garner publicity in print or other media.

LEGAL
Attorneys who can oversee compliance with organizational standards and regulations, and advise on employment law, intellectual property, contracts, and other legal matters that arise

Job Description

Authority and Responsibility:
The Board of Trustees is the governing authority of the Tallahassee Museum, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. As a member of the Board, a Trustee acts in a position of trust for the community and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization.

Qualifications and Skills:
Knowledge and skills in one or more areas of Board governance: fundraising, financial, marketing/promotion, cultural facilities, legal. Prior demonstrated involvement and support of the Tallahassee Museum preferred.

Term:
Directors are elected by the board to serve for a one-year term. Directors may serve for six consecutive terms.

Requirements

Commitment to the mission and work of the Museum.

  1. Willingness to serve on at least one committee and actively participate; attendance at Board meetings six times per year, and periodic committee meetings.
  2. An estimated time commitment of ten hours per month, (includes Board preparation, meeting and committee meeting time).
  3. Stay informed on the programs and services provided by the Museum and publicly support them. Prepare for and participate in the discussions and the deliberations of the Board.
  4. Lead by example with the Museum's fundraising efforts. Be a member of the Museum and make an annual monetary contribution that is your most significant charitable giving while on the board.

Major Duties

  1. Governing Tallahassee Museum in accordance with the Museum's bylaws and national museum accreditation standards.
  2. Promote Tallahassee Museum’s mission and help grow audience and membership through community networking.
  3. Sell tickets to and commit to boosting attendance of yearly special events.
  4. Cultivate and/or initiate relationships with current and prospective donors and supporters.
  5. Establish overall strategic direction, long and short term goals, annual objectives and priorities for the Museum.
  6. Demonstrate leadership and commitment to organizational values.
  7. Be aware of and disclose any personal and/or professional conflict of interest.
