Art In The Trees: The Folk Art of O.L. Samuels

November 8 - February 28

The fantastic, exotic, soulful work of O.L. Samuels comes to the Tallahassee Museum on Nov. 8 in an exhibition that will change the way viewers perceive natural branches and roots. Mr. Samuels, who will be 78 years young on Nov. 18, “sees” people, animals and blended creatures in the twisted, lithe or forceful forms of tree limbs, roots, and salvaged wood. He conjures his creatures using his unique combination of carving and glitter-painting, creating works that are almost as vibrant and spellbinding as the man himself.

Mr. Samuels, a Georgia native, former New York City resident, and now a Tallahasseean, has been a factory worker, prizefighter, and a tree surgeon. He is a preacher, teacher and artist with a hard past and an uplifted spirit. His skillful, imaginative works of folk art can be found in galleries and private collections around the country, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to see and purchase Mr. Samuels’ work right here in his own back yard. His artwork will be exhibited in the Museum's Fleischmann Natural Science Building Nov. 8 - Feb. 28. The Museum will highlight Art In The Trees during its Feb. 20 Saturday Matinee of the Arts, part of Florida State University’s Seven Days of Opening Nights.
