Florida Girls & Boys & Their Toys
Exhibit Runs June 18 through Aug. 1
A handmade “Pooh” bear, a Tonka fire engine, and a set of Tinker Toys are among the favorite playthings from decades past that have
been collected for exhibition this season at the Tallahassee Museum.
Florida Girls & Boys & Their Toys, is an entertaining and nostalgic exhibit, whether viewers are seeing these toys for the first time ever or for the first time in years.
“Children fall in love with their toys, and that affection tends to last a lifetime,” said Linda Deaton, the Museum’s chief curator of collections and exhibits. “The toys and games in this collection evoke fond childhood memories, and many parents relive some of that happiness when they introduce these toys into their own children’s lives.” Dolls from Kewpie to Peewee Herman, a miniature tea set, and an iron circus wagon are in the display, along with historical photos, and a video compilation of classic toy commercials from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Hop-scotch, checkers, puppets, blocks and hula-hoop offer visitors hands-on fun.

The exhibit will appear in the Museum’s Phipps Gallery through Aug. 1. It is on loan from the Museum of Florida History Traveling Exhibits Program (TREX) and is sponsored in part by the City of Tallahassee, Leon County, and the Council on Culture & Arts.
