Traveling Trunks - Offsite
Do you need hands-on objects to help present exciting and effective programs about this region's cultural and natural history?  Each Traveling Trunk is based on the specific ecology and history of this region and uses a whole language approach that is integrated with the Sunshine State Standards.  Trunks include a teacher's guide, artifacts, hands-on objects, videos/audio cassettes, activities, and more.  These resource trunks may be loaned for one or more weeks for a $10 per week fee.  Trunks are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis
Environmental Awareness, Values and Action

Grades K-2

This trunk lays a foundation for strong environmental values.  It refocuses students’ attention on the natural world and environmental needs as well as what they can do. 

Ecology of Pollution

Grades 3-4
SSS:  SC.3.L.14.1; SC.3.L.17.2; SC.4.L.17.4; SC.4.L.17.2

Activities in this trunk will help students view themselves as an integral part of an ecosystem.  Along with other organisms, we have certain habitat requirements that include a clean and abundant supply of food, air, water, and space.

The Longleaf Pine Forest: An Ecosystem in Peril

Grades 7-8
SSS:  SC.7.E.6.6; SC.7.L.15.3; SC.8.N.4.1

This is a great way for students to learn about an endangered ecosystem that exists, quite literally, in their backyards.  Longleaf pine forests are critical for the diversity of both plant and animal life in North Florida.

Red Wolves:  Endangered and Recovering

Grades 4-5

This resource trunk includes hands on objects, skulls, two teacher’s guides, books, a video and poster.  Learn more about this animals needs, it’s history and what effect people have had on it.

Ice Age Florida

Grades K-2 & 4

Even though Florida never had land dinosaurs, it did have some mega animals.  What was Florida like during the last Ice Age?  This trunk gives your students a look at the geology, environment, and animals which lived during this time period.  Includes posters, books, videos, models, fossils and reproductions.

Hogsheads, Crummies, and Yard Geese: Florida Railroad History

Grades 4-5
SSS:  SS.4.A.1.2; SS.4.A.4.2; SS.4.A.6.2; SS.4.G.1.2; SS.4.E.1.1; LA.5.1.6.2

Your students will acquire an understanding of the historical development of railroads and the role they played in the history of Florida and Tallahassee.

Antebellum North Florida

Grades 4
SSS:  SS.4.A.1.1; SS.4.A.6.2; SS.4.A.6.3

This trunk provides resources and activities which help students gain a better understanding and appreciation of 19th century Florida history.  The focus is primarily on the history of Tallahassee and Leon County prior to the Civil War.

B.O. Wood Commissary Trunk

Grades 4
SSS:  MA.3.A.1.1; SS.4.E.1.2

Lesson plans, activities and hands-on objects are contained in this resource trunk to help students gain a better understanding of “the period of naval stores as a major industry in Florida.”  This period extended from 1906 to 1923 and had a major impact on the natural resources and peoples’ lives.

World War II:  The Home Front Trunk

Grades 4-5
SSS:  SS.4.A.7.3; LA.5.2.1.5; LA.5.3.1.2

Here is a way to help bring World War II alive for students.  Students learn about the war effort both locally and nationally through the activities included.  his trunk provides hands-on objects such as period posters, photographs, newspaper articles, and videos as well as reproductions of a defense stamp album, a ration book, and a war bond.
