May 2017 Featured Artist: Mark Fletcher
Mark Fletcher is a long time friend of the Tallahassee Museum and a truly inspirational artist. Originally born in Ohio, Mark eventually moved to the city of Tallahassee and has resided in the city for the past few years. When he is not on the road showcasing his art at different venues and assisting in SketchCrawl marathons with other artists from around the world, he stops by the Tallahassee Museum to gather some inspiration for his artwork. After a few visits, Mark decided to become a member of the Tallahassee museum where he now holds SketchCrawl classes and other art classes throughout the year.
Mark continually impresses our staff and visitors with new and intriguing art throughout the year. The time, thought, and effort that he puts into his art can be seen by anybody who views it. Those same characteristics are used by Mark to help others achieve their artistic goals as well. Contrary to what others believe, Mark claims that someone just doesn’t become an artist. Instead, he believes that there is a sense of creativity inside of everyone. He states that “being an artist is not a decision or a choice, it’s just something people do.” Mark says that he hopes his artwork “inspires others to slow down, observe, and enjoy the outdoors a little more.” He says he finds “comfort by seeing order in the complex patterns of life” and hopes his viewers and art enthusiasts alike can see a sense of order in nature’s complexity within his work.
At the Tallahassee Museum, we believe that it is important to educate others about the natural area in which we live and, as Mark states, “refresh our worldview” from time-to-time through different cultural mediums, such as art. This is why the Tallahassee Museum is happy to have Mark Fletcher as our first Featured Artist for the month of May 2017. Congratulations Mr. Fletcher!
